Post-Tensioning Concrete: Stronger Futures

Post-tensioning (PT) systems are vital to ensure modern buildings stand the test of time. The Post-Tension Institute (PTI) defines post-tensioning as “a method of reinforcing (strengthening) concrete…with high-strength steel strands or bars.” This process is performed by placing steel bars below the concrete, letting the concrete fully cure and then applying tension to the bars. This method helps concrete reach its strongest state.

When construction companies need the toughest concrete possible for projects that will stand the test of time, they often seek out post-tensioned concrete, which strengthens slabs by using high-strength steel strands or bars. These slabs are created by pouring concrete over the steel and applying tension post-cure.

According to the Post-Tension Institute, a leader in post-tension concrete design and installation, this method offers more substantial structural support than traditional concrete slabs. PT concrete has numerous benefits – especially for high-rise buildings and multi-level parking structures – including cost and materials savings, sustainability, schedule advantages, high durability, low maintenance and high resistance to rust, corrosion, temperature, weather elements and fire. While PT has numerous benefits, it may not apply to every project. Certified professionals can determine whether PT is the right fit.

The PTI offers several certifications and training programs for field personnel to increase their knowledge of PT and comply with specific requirements. Workshops such as Level 1 Unbonded PT Installation, Level 1 & 2 Unbonded PT Installer & Inspector and Level 1 & 2 Unbonded PT Repair are paramount in ensuring field personnel understand the usability, stability, safety and overall performance of post-tensioning concrete construction.

Rockford superintendents Brent Hillard and Adam Koorndyk recently completed the Level 1 Unbonded PT Installation and Level 1 Unbonded PT Repair certifications. Each team member attended multi-day training courses, followed by a test. Upon successfully passing the test, each team member received the Level 1 certification and is eligible to apply for Level 2 after 800 hours of fieldwork.

“I chose to pursue this accreditation to support an upcoming project. This new knowledge allows me to supervise PT installations onsite,” said Koorndyk.

Similarly, Hillard previously worked on the Studio Park Tower project, a post-tensioned structure, where he learned more about the installation of PT concrete. He pursued the certification to gain further insight into the process, stating, “Knowledge is power.”

The American Concrete Institute requires a Level 2-certified individual to be present onsite and perform the layout, installation and tensioning of every post-tension project. Although Rockford now boasts two Level 1-certified professionals, we partner with trades to install and test the PT concrete. While not directly performed by Rockford, Hillard and Koorndyk in the superintendent role can adequately plan and oversee the installation and testing of PT concrete, providing deeper insight into the process.

Hillard’s and Koorndyk’s certifications ensure jobs are safer and more accurately performed. With Grand Rapids seeing more vertical rather than horizontal projects, such as the recently completed Studio Park Tower, post-tension concrete will grow in relevance. Rockford’s two new certified concrete professionals will bring value to our projects and help us build a better world.
