Around GR: Your Guide to Date Night in Grand Rapids
By Kelsey Vesche
Ever tried to plan a date night in Grand Rapids? If so, you know there are an overwhelming number of things to do and places to go. And while there’s no way to summarize everything happening in the city in one writeup, we’ve taken some of the hard work out of your planning and put together a small guide that will make your night on the town one to remember.
Breweries
Grand Rapids is known for its breweries, and recently, I’ve sought to try more of the many (actually, innumerable) different types of beer GR has to offer. Some of my recent visits include The Mitten Brewing Co. (the Mango Gold is a must try), Founders Brewing Co., Harmony Hall, Jolly Pumpkin and Grand Rapids Brewing Co. Each of these breweries has something different to offer, such as live music, great patios, unforgettable pizza and more. Some also offer a discount through our Rock Perks program.
One of the best ways to find exactly what you like and to experience as many of the great breweries in Grand Rapids as possible is to work toward becoming a Brewsader. After checking in at just eight breweries you will earn the title. If you’re feeling particularly ambitious, you and your date can even attempt to earn the designation in just a few days, turning your date night into a (potentially very fun) date weekend.
Laughs
Not a fan of beer? No problem! Date nights are always better when they include good laughs, and when I head to Dr. Grins Comedy Club, I know I am in for a good time. Conveniently located on the top floor of The B.O.B., Dr. Grins offers various showtimes Thursday through Saturday nights starting at 5:30 p.m. No two shows are alike! Dr. Grins has hosted many famous standup comedians, including Chelsea Handler, Steve-O, Doug Stanhope and many more. Grab some dinner on one of The B.O.B.’s lower levels, then head upstairs with your date for a night to remember.
Embracing the Winter Weather
Because we’re in the middle of the winter season here in Grand Rapids, cold weather, ice and snow are all a concern. Luckily, the city has many exciting options for those seeking to embrace the weather rather than running from it. I recommend winter hiking with your date as a great way to experience winter in the city! Start your day with a trip to The Outside Coffee Co. and enjoy a cup of coffee in their heated geo-domes. It’s a great way to get you warmed up before hitting a beautiful West Michigan trail. After your coffee, check out Millennium Park, Provin Trails, Blandford Nature Center or The White Pine Trail.
