Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building

The Rockford Construction / Clark Construction joint-venture team successfully built Michigan State University’s Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building (ISTB) in East Lansing. The six-story, 160,000-sq.-ft. structure provides modern teaching and interdisciplinary research space necessary to support significant growth in STEM-related fields and aid in the recruitment of new students and faculty.

Designed to mirror MSU’s Grand Rapids Research Center, the facility features wet labs, research space, offices, collaborative meeting and flexible learning spaces. These spaces, designed around aligned research interests rather than academic departments, support a modern curriculum centered on interdisciplinary collaboration and hands-on learning.

Rockford utilized a design-assist delivery method which engaged trades early-on, allowing for design and constructability input. Early involvement allowed Rockford to schedule the right trades at the right time, which resulted in a project completed several months early.
