Rockford Construction completed a 13,000-sq.-ft. shipping dock building addition for Meijer that also included a new battery charging building. The shipping dock addition tied into an existing -10 degree high-bay freezer. To achieve the desired 28 degrees Fahrenheit temperature, we tapped into the existing ammonia refrigeration system and installed 4 new hanging evaporators. Under the building slab, we installed a new heated glycol system to keep the floor subgrade from freezing. We also installed passthrough openings into the existing freezer with high-speed thermal rollup doors and specialty air curtains.
To build the addition, all public utilities had to be relocated. We installed a ground improvement system (aggregate piers) to allow proper bearing capacity for the building’s foundation system. We leveraged Building Information Modeling (BIM) to model the existing underground utilities, new utilities and aggregate piers. Clash detection was also deployed to avoid underground collisions.
The project also consisted of a new storm retention pond and new employee parking lot.
