Thai Summit Press Pit – Projects | Rockford Construction

Thai Summit

Press Pit

This design build effort involved partnering with Thai Summit, a Tier 1 auto supplier and a repeat client for Rockford. Work included an expansion to the existing facility while operations were in full swing. Detailed logistics, dewatering, stormwater control and schedule efficiencies resulted in the addition of a 1,600-ton press pit and support spaces for Thai Summit.

Rockford coordinated with an overseas supplier for design considerations related to the new press, also leveraging building information modeling (BIM) to engineer and coordinate the installation. During construction of the press pit, the existing structural columns and footings had to be moved or re-supported, all while active stamping continued and the building remained in operation. Additional highlights include:

  • Engineering a solution to shore the existing overhead crane foundation and structural steel
  • Installing crane and rails along with final calibration
  • Installing “H” piles with wood lagging
  • Engineering a dewatering system with well points
  • Creating a tunnel to connect to the existing scrap tailing conveyor
